These two are RP characters from a decade-old RP group so they exist in the middle of a lot of interweaving plot threads which I have tried to summarize as best as possible. For worldbuilding, think of an urban fantasy. The main story is set in San Francisco in a world where magic is real and different magical and non-magical species live together. Humans are born without magic, though they can use it with the assistance of magical tools and objects. Humans can also be cursed to gain magic abilities, though they usually don't have control over the results and the human body must be warped to accommodate the magic. Sorcerers look human, but are born with general magic abilities and have to study and work to specialize in them. Demons can have a variety of demonic qualities, such as horns, tails and pointy ears and teeth. They are typically very strong in one field of magic (elemental demons, sirens, and shapeshifting doppelgangers are some examples). Finally, dragon-people are exactly what they sound like. They also have no innate magic abilities like humans, but have scales, tales, wings and other reptilian qualities that set them apart.
Name: Ruth Agnes Murphy (playlist)
Birthday: June 6, 1986
Height: 157cm - 5'2
From: Quebec, Canada
Species: Human? (Body is surgically altered to perform advanced elemental magic)
Occupation: Alchemist
Backstory: Daughter of an affair gone wrong between a politician and a nobody. Utterly joyless, intensely intelligent and entertains dangerous thoughts. A sociopathic woman who has been using people for her personal gain and to survive her whole life by perfecting her "good, wholesome girl" persona she keeps up 99% of the time. Studied alchemy with the sole purpose of getting away from her home and got a PhD in the field. As a human, she had always longed for a connection to magic to attempt to fill a pervasive feeling of emptiness she's had her whole life, and she was prepared to gain magical ability for herself by any means necessary. After graduating, she struck gold when she met Leora on a research trip to Greece. She used her talents as a scientist and a liar to seduce and drain the demon from nearly all of her elemental magic. After leaving Leora to rot, she realized her human body wasn't fit for magic and got together with an old colleague from her graduate school days to surgically change her body to be more demon-like on the inside in order to accommodate the new magic. Afterwards, she settled in San Francisco to make a proper alchemy business, where she sold potion components and worked on commissions for all types of concoctions.
Name: Leora Kazakos (playlist)
Birthday: February 10, 1989
Height: 175cm - 1986
From: Thessaloniki, Greece
Species: Demon
Occupation: Mercenary, specialest girl in the world (self-appointed)
Backstory:Backstory: Lesbian fuckboy mercenary with a god complex. Leora comes from a family of water elemental demons as a prodigy in that magic field. Water magic would end up being the only thing she cared to invest her time into, as she dropped out of high school in her last year to work on cargo and fishing ships. Four years later, after sinking a crew that mistreated her, she was taken under the wing of a Greek smuggling ring-leader, Ilia, as her protegee. There she worked as a mercenary for a number of years, her ability able to drown people on dry land and easily disappear bodies into the ocean gaining her a lot of favor with Ilia. All of this culminated in her believing, delusionally, that she is uniquely powerful and worthy of being adored by everyone and anyone. She dutifully journals about her life because she believes that they will be important documents once she is a renowned historical figure in the future and unironically hopes to have a constellation named after her. She's the worst.
Her cockiness is her downfall when Ruth finds her on her trip to Greece. Leora has no idea that Ruth is there to perform her (very illegal btw) ritual to steal her magic. In her eyes, through her irresistible beauty and charms she swept a pretty Canadian tourist girl off her feet one summer and they had a whirlwind romance- at least until the morning she woke up alone with barely enough magic left to tip over a cup of water. When she realized she was gone her ego-driven love of Ruth's partnership mutated into hatred, then an intense obsession when she rationalized the betrayal as just another plot point in the epic story that is her life. She immediately dropped everything to track Ruth down and steal her magic back. Given the number of Ruth Murphys in the world and the fact that she didn't really know much about her at all, it took her 5 years to finally find her in San Francisco.
Leora eventually finds Ruth's alchemy shop, beginning a months-long game of cat and mouse. They enjoy such fun situationship activities as:
However enamored with her she was, Leora's goal was to steal back some of her magic, intending to take only half so that she and Ruth would be linked forever. Ruth, of course, did not want to share or give her magic back, and enjoyed toying with her as she kept the ritual she used to steal the magic a secret. Unfortunately for her, Leora was obsessively persistent and found another magic specialist named Navid to "help" her steal her magic back. This ended up in Leora shooting Ruth after failing to convince her to share, and conducting a faulty version of the same ritual Ruth used on her while she lay in the hospital. Leora was not knowledgeable about the ritual enough to know that Navid had given her the wrong components and the debacle ended up with Navid taking the magic, leaving both women with nothing.
Since this new ritual ended up giving the magic to a third party, a resigned Ruth was forced to work together with Leora to get it back. The two of them followed Navid to Germany, where he was hired to curse the German branch of a mafia family by a semi-estranged family member who wanted to take over the family business it's a whole other complicated plot don't worry about it. Ruth and Leora shared an apartment as they attempted to hunt down Navid and his assistant Irene, Ruth's ex who she still harbored some affectionate feelings for. In order to keep Leora from hunting down Irene, Ruth makes a magic pact between the two of them that forbids either of them from talking to or hurting her in any way. Leora agrees as long as she includes a clause forbidding either of them to lie to each other. If either of them break the pact, the other gets to keep the magic for good. Unfortunately for her, Leora encounters Irene while tracking down Navid and the two of them get into a fight. Irene breaks Leora's horn, and Leora stabs Irene's leg with the end of it, breaking her pact with Ruth. Once she realizes this, Leora, a sore loser, threatens to kill Irene anyway if Ruth doesn't also break her end of the pact which she reluctantly does by lying to Leora by telling her she loves her.
//imgThe whole Germany arc proved to be an useless endeavor, since at the end, the magic was given to Irene by Navid because he didn't want either Ruth or Leora to have it, and it has become impossible to extract again. Ruth is now emptier than ever, but is currently distancing herself from Leora, since her life has revolved around her ever since meeting her. Leora ended up making a contract to regain some power with Navid despite her hatred for him and is reluctantly working as his lackey and continues to brainstorm new ways of fucking with Ruth to get back at her for starting this whole thing in the first place.
